The article is the first in a series about the middle age as a stage of life course. The authors consider the theoretical basis of the problem (views of C. Jung, F. Hudson, E. Erikson, J. Marcia, R. Josselson, J. Levinson, P. Perun, D. Bielby amd P. Baltes and his colleagues). The key concepts are ego identity and middle age (E.Erikson), dynamics of normative historical and age events (P. Baltes), transitions of individual from one age stage to another (D. Levinson), and finally, life events schedule (P. Perun and D. Bielby).
