Factors, Consistency, and Realization of Reproductive Intentions in Russia

The article elaborates the research of reproductive intentions in Russia. The authors study the dynamics and realization of the declared reproductive intentions from the first half of the 2000s to the present days. The study bases on cross-sectional and panel data from two representative population surveys, namely, the survey "Parents and Children, Men and Women in the Family and Society" (Russian GGS) conducted in 2004, 2007, and 2011, and the survey "Person, Family, Society" held in 2017 and 2020. The data shows no fundamental changes in the distribution of answers about reproductive intentions in 2004—2011. However, by 2017 the respondents began to express certain positive reproductive intentions significantly more often. At the same time, the level of realization of certain intentions among women has not changed over the entire observation period and levels around 40%. The most significant factor in the implementation of positive reproductive intentions turned out to be partner status, and the chances of having a child increase both due to the presence of a stable partnership and due to a change of partner. Significant factors that are negatively associated with the implementation of reproductive intentions include a low subjective assessment of the financial situation of the family.
