Russian Cossacks: factors of self-identification

Abstract

The article presents a description of the complex sociological study of the Cossacks conducted in the subjects of the North Caucasus Federal District. The values of the Cossacks, handed down from generation to generation, form a special world view, based on patriotism, aspiration for participation in socially significant activities to protect the territories and ensure law and order, and the upbringing of the younger generation. The dilution of the social status, the legislative (formal) division of the Cossacks into the register and the public lead to serious problems that prevent the real ization of the potential of the Cossacks as a subject of ensuring security and stability in the regions of presence.
