The article provides an overview of the main strategies for avoiding and overcoming shame which can be applied both to the subject of shame and the participants of the situation. Given that shame experienced by the subject can be perceived as a nuisance by the surrounding persons and can disturb the smooth running of the situation, each person will try to avoid it. Hence, strategies for avoiding and overcoming shame are of a social nature. Particular attention is given to shamefacedness which delimits the private sphere from the pub lic sphere and tact which is the ability to be considerate to others. If the awkward situation is inevitable, the shame can be overcome by laughter, smile and the denial of shame itself, coupled with other emotions that can replace it.Downloads
