Abstract

The article examines the interaction between educational and career aspirations of Russian youth and their impact on educational and early career trajectories. An analysis of longitudinal data from the TREC project (2013—2023) reveals that aspirations are structured around the norm of mandatory higher education; however, actual attainment often diverges from stated plans, particularly depending on family educational capital and place of residence. Special attention is given to the mismatch between educational achievements and career aspirations, as well as the identification of groups at high risk of underachieving their educational goals. The findings emphasize the need for a comprehensive approach to studying aspirations and their realization, taking into account socioeconomic status and urban context. Results show that it is the intersection of career goals and resource base (family educational capital, urban environment) that explains differences between realization, exceeding, and under-realization of aspirations.
