This paper examines the impact of generative AI (artificial intelligence) on interpersonal trust, trust in organizations, and institutions. It argues that the rise in information volume and complexity has led to the development of strategies of representative trust, which involves delegating the decision-making about reliability to intermediaries. AI has increasingly served as such an intermediary. The article also investigates the features and prospects of using neural networks to assess trust, using the example of transformations that occur in the digital space with romantic relationships and reputation. The integration of AI into dating services and reputation management could result in the substitution of human interaction with a simulated dialogue between users and their “digital twins”, further blurring the distinction between reality and artificial constructs, truth and falsehood. The humanization of AI in the future could lead to the mechanization of humans, while the growing reliance on neural networks may erode trust in real people. This underscores the need to redirect public focus from technical trust in AI to moral trust in the individuals whose decisions impact its use and development, as a crucial call to action.
