Abstract

The article examines the intersection of gender and marital status and links between gender differences and access to social support in later life. Globalization and changing cultural norms dramatically affect inter-generational relations and lead to intergenerational transfers. The basic reasons behind these changes are rural-urban migration, increase in the participation of women in the paid labor, break-up of the extended family, declining fertility rates and decrease in family size.
