The collective monograph "The "Arrow of Time" in the Mass Consciousness of Russians: Assessments of the Past, Judgments About the Present, Ideas About the Future" (ed. by M.K. Gorshkov, 2024) analyzes the mass historical consciousness of Russians based on a national representative population survey (February 2024). The authors characterize the dynamics of change, relying on comparisons with the results of national sociological surveys conducted by the Institute of Sociology of the Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences in previous periods. The research objectives of the project are aimed at identifying mass assessments of past events that demonstrate the dominant values and attitudes of the present with a focus on the future. The chosen metaphor of the "arrow of time" serves as a unifying factor throughout the eight chapters. However, it is understood in the work in a simplified manner, as a mere temporal perspective, without revealing the complexity and ambiguity of the metaphorical concept. To interpret the rich empirical material, the authors propose interesting explanatory frameworks. This review examines the key propositions and empirical findings of the researchers, noting the difficulties of sociologically studying historical understandings. It emphasizes the importance of sociological assessments of the mass consciousness of Russian society in developing social policy that reflects the interests of citizens.
