Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Perceptions of Russians (The Study of the Trinity Home-to-Home Walk Rite in the Village of Shcherbinino in Moscow Region)

The article examines contemporary Russian perceptions of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) using the example of a Slavic cultural heritage site — the Trinity Home-to-Home Walk rite in the village of Shcherbinino in the Moscow Region. Given the modern understanding of ICH as a “living” phenomenon (i.e., fully existing only at the moment of reproduction), constructivism has been chosen as the primary approach to examining ICH. It postulates an individual’s interpretation of the surrounding world in accordance with knowledge ingrained in the process of socialization and developed through ongoing social interaction. The constructivist idea, from a hereditary perspective, is explained by the problem of the search for identity. The author proposes the concept of “heritagization” as an integral concept in the context of research into the process of constructing a cultural phenomenon as heritage. The concept of “heritagization” allowed the study of the Trinity rite to be embedded in a broader sociocultural context through comparison with Neopagan practices of preserving Slavic heritage. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with residents of Shcherbinino. The study’s results confirm the transformation of ICH phenomena (changes in the meanings that heritage bearers ascribe to it) as a result of the influence of external and internal political and sociocultural factors. The use of a semiotic approach to analyzing informants’ responses allowed the creation of a contemporary semantic picture of the rite, incorporating archaic meanings (plant cult and theme of laughter, games, and entertainments), current interpretations (religious (Christian and “pagan”), folk, and analogically constructed), and motifs (culinary-gastronomic and communicative).
