Models of Sociocultural Adaptation of Migrants: History and Typology

The article presents a comprehensive review of more than a century of experience in studying models of socio-cultural adaptation of migrants (1918-2023). The purpose of this review is a consistent analysis and systematization of existing theoretical approaches. The authors pay special attention to a critical examination of theoretical approaches to adaptation, their interrelations, and evolutionary development, identification of gaps in the study of adaptation processes and for a broader use of the accumulated theoretical heritage. Unlike other existing reviews, the article presents for the first time a comprehensive interdisciplinary typology of adaptation models considering their evolutionary development. The authors show that the entire diversity of adaptation models can be reduced to four basic types: assimilation, separation, integration, and marginalization. At the same time, the authors note the existence of extended versions of models that account for bi- and multicultural processes. The practical significance of the work lies in creating a basis for more effective use of adaptation models in modern migration studies. The work also reveals the need for a wider dissemination of information on the accumulated theoretical experience among the scientific community.
