Trust in Manipulative Information: From Perception to Decision Making

Abstract

Decision making is strongly influenced by available information.The growing volume and new technologies for creating manipulative information cause high risks of disorientation in the media space. The article demonstrates key interdisciplinary approaches to the study of several important categories of manipulative information and the technological evolution from common media manipulations (using the example of media framing through euphemisms) to modern types of false information (fake news and deepfakes). The authors consider the role of trust in manipulative information in the context of (a) the source, (b) content, and (c) consumer of information. An entire body of interdisciplinary research demonstrates that the credibility of fake content and its influence on decision-making is significantly dependent on the factors belonging to these categories. This theoretical review not only combines the results of key studies in psychology, sociology, and economics, but also significantly expands the understanding of the manipulative information impact features in the context of the rapid development of new technologies.
