Abstract

The paper conceptualizes active longevity as a social phenomenon and the basis for social policy, improving the quality of life in old age. Several concepts reflect the socio-economic potential of the elderly, including “successful aging,” “productive aging,” “harmonious aging,” “healthy aging,” and “active aging.” Semantically, “active longevity” excludes negative connotations, making it more accurate. We describe components and determinants of active longevity by grouping them into internal and external ones. The internal factors relating to human behavior include attitudes, motives, and actions, while the external factors relating to societal conditions include standards of living, infrastructure capabilities, and public approval. According to the authors, active longevity refers to a set of beliefs and behaviors that support long-term health and happiness, social connections, the preservation of one’s employment, intellectual and creative pursuits, self-realization and life satisfaction, and the efficient realization of human potential at all ages.

A review of active longevity measures revealed their focus on health and social infrastructure. Existing measures have a significant limitation regarding the comparability of the survey data used to calculate active longevity indices. The Human Capabilities of the Elderly in Russia Index (HCERI), developed by C. Davis, is the correct integral index to measure active longevity in Russia.
