Abstract

The June 2013 protest surge in Brazil that took thousands of Brazilians to the streets caught the political scientists off guard. The purpose of the article is to present two interpretations of what happened in Brazil. According to the first version which is popular among representatives of social sciences and mass media, the reason behind the June protests is the appearance of the new actors which are social networks being unpredictable, decentralized and spontaneous. The second version uses the categories of social classes and the division «left–right» to interpret the events and to understand the motives of the protesters.
