The authors examine entrepreneurial activities of the population living in northern monotowns as one of directions of growth of monoprofile municipal institutions. The empirical basis of the study is a survey conducted among residents of monotowns in Arkhangelsk region in May-August 2014. The study describes the level of entrepreneurial activity of the residents of the northern monotowns, their peculiarities and reasons behind their reluctance to launch their own business. Factors that influence entrepreneurial activity were revealed. The author proposes a set of measures aimed to increase the entrepreneurial activity among people living in northern monotowns. Special resource centers that could provide professional and vocational education as well as any additional information concerning privately run businesses are needed to tackle the problem of the restricted professional structure of the population of monotowns; both governmental bodies and successful businesses and experts should give advice at any stages of enterprise life circleDownloads
