Violence in metropolitan schools and colleges

Abstract

The author presents the results of the analysis of the opinions of school (N=6606) and college students (N=1034) concerning physical and psychological abuse in schools and colleges in Moscow. The study shows that among school and college students psychological abuse is more common than physical violence. The most stressful situations that come from teachers and peers are related to humiliation, insult, ridicule, rejection, indifference, oppression et cet. Remarkably, these types of abuse are cited mainly by school students than college students. It is revealed that physical and psychological abuse is more frequent in schools than in colleges. In situations where security has been violated students seek help from their supervising teacher or group curators; he/she becomes a trustworthy person and enters a reference group along with students` friends. According to the results of the study, the level of students` trust toward educational psychologists is very law.
