The article considers the "potential" and "educational potential" concepts. Individual educational potential represents the set of personal and professional characteristics of the individual which are formed under the influence of institutional conditions and are necessary for successful work in the chosen profession. The study is based on the results of the sociological research conducted among young students of the Volga region higher education institutions and focus groups among students of the Penza higher education institutions in 2015. The paper provides analysis of the educational strategies and modern conditions in higher education institutions. The findings of the study suggest that a successful student has high academic performance combining studies, work and self-education (the latter is hardly possible among students due to the lack of free time). Today students need to make efforts and have proper skills to receive a good education. The modern young people are ready to continue their studies because they are convinced that the education gives career opportunities and helps getting a well - paid job. The studies prove that most of young students do not carry out research work as they do not have any special interest and conditions to develop their innovative potential in the universities.Downloads
