Academic professionalism in the era of change: sub-identities and transformation of time budgets

Abstract

The article is based on the National Research University “Higher School of Economic” case study; the academic professionals’ identity fragmentation caused by the modern education reform is considered. The study involved 705 university teachers and was focused on the professors’ working time budgets. The authors single out and describe eight groups of university teachers with different structure of working time budgets: (1) teachers; (2) teachers dealing with scientific work; (3) teachers engaged in administrative work; (4) researchers; (5) administrators; (6) teachers/researchers/administrators; (7) teachers/researchers; (8) teachers/administrators. The classification is created through comparison of professional goals, evaluation of the working conditions, strategic goals of the university, and attitudes towards the publication-oriented policy.
