Socio-cultural identification of the modern Russian Cossacks: is the process over?

The paper provides an analysis of the results of activities of the authorities and public organizations related to the construction of socio-cultural identity of the Russian Cossacks. Three-factor model of the Cossack self-identification which features ethnic, social and emotional and psychological aspects is discussed in the paper. The authors prove that according to Cossack perceptions the Cossack affiliation is linked to the Cossack origin and genealogy as well as membership in the Cossack organizations. The authors conclude that when it comes to customs and everyday life the modern Cossacks adopt ad hoc approach. The data obtained indicate the actualization of rules and traditions presenting the Cossack brotherhood as a military and social class in the Cossack community. The authors highlight that the Cossack organizations play an important role in self-identification of this ethnic community. The Cossack community assesses the prospects of development of these organizations in a positive way and considers possible expansion of their activities. Based on the secondary data analysis and the authors’ study the conclusion suggests that the process of social and cultural identification in the modern Cossack community is actively developing and is not completed. Providing the necessary conditions an innovation scenario of development which focuses on the Cossack activities related to social responsibility is possible.
